Tom McLaughlin: Hi I am director of a 175 unit condo association. The condo was outfitted in 1983 with Chloride Pyrotector smoke alarms. These units are now almost 28 years old and we are concerned they may be too old to be reliable even though the self-test buttons seems to work.My question - in your opinion, are these units past their service life? I looked through the service manual but could not tell their expected life and cannot find Chloride Inc contacts anywhere. If you can help with any info, please email me or call. Thanks for your consideration.Aloha,Tom McLaughlinDirector, Hale Kaheka AOAO808-294-3370

Fred Kawa: I was an engineer at Pyrotector before Chloride bought the company and can say that the two prototype 30-52 's I have, made in 1977, are still working fine. We never released any shelf or operating life projections in those days but not much can go wrong with them except maybe an electrolytic capacitor drying out and shorting and if that happened, the operating voltage is so low that I doubt it would ignite. Plus, as long as the test button triggers the alarm, it should be fine. The test button is designed not to interrupt the light path but to bend the light path enough to simulate less than 2% smoke obscuration, the design criteria of the day. I hope this helps.

Fred Schubert: The unit is wired to AC, when the bathroom lights are turned on, the unit beeps, similar to test button. The test lever still works properly, but when I took the unit off the wall, any jar would cause the same sound to be heard. Can the unit be repaired, or replaced? It looks like the date on the back is 08 15 78, thank you for your time, please let me know how to proceed.Fred Schubert
